In Your Footstep

Part 9

I let them tell the others the good news, I was happy for them but it wasn’t my place to tell everyone and their brother. Plus, I didn’t know how Lance going to take it, since they had gotten married Lance had clamed down again. But on the business stand point Abbey was going to be out of commission for a few months toward the end of her pregnancy and once the baby gets here.

Abbey had a plan though, she wanted to finish out their current tour and once that was done she thought maybe they could go into the studio and work on a new album, while they waited for her to give birth. She didn’t think that would be too mush stress for her. Once the baby was hear she wanted to spend a few weeks at home with it and they go on tour. Of course she wanted to bring the baby with, which I think was going to be a whole lot harder than she thought. But she wouldn’t listen to Scott so why would she have listened to me.

I guess you could say Ann and JC were in for a surprise when they got back from their hunny moon. Ann was so happy, but I think it worried JC. He wasn’t ready to be a daddy, he hoped Ann wouldn’t get any ideas from her friends. JC was happy for them, but that’s just not what he wanted for himself. I think he just wanted some time for it to be just the two of them.

As promised me, JC and the others went back into the studio. It was hard at first to focus on what we were doing, with all that had happened. Lance was worried about what Abbey’s pregnancy would do to the group, and JC kept getting calls from Ann wandering when he would be home and what he wanted for dinner. Me on the other hand kept getting calls on my cell from Abbey, Scott, and Roxy. It was always something with them.

Abbey wanted me to convince Scott that he wanted a girl, and Roxy was calling to see if I could get Abbey to name the baby after her. Scott was calling me to asked me to talk to about how awesome it would be to have boy. At some point I just quit answering it if their numbers showed up on the caller id. It worked until Abbey started calling from the hotels they were staying at.

“Are you avoiding me?” She asked. “No, I’ve just been really busy you know how it is.” I lied, after all I didn’t want her to be mad at me. This was just something I didn’t want to be in the middle of. “Yeah, I guess so. Have you talked to Scott yet?” She asked. “No, I haven’t.” I huffed. “When are you going to?” She asked. “I’m not, Abbey come on this isn’t my place. What does it matter what the baby is anyway?” I replied.

“It doesn’t matter I just want a girl.” She said. “Are you going to find out the baby’s gender?” I asked. “No I don’t think so. We want to be surprised.” Abbey said with a giggle, I guess the thought of having a baby was starting to sound good to her. Through from what Scott had been saying to Joey, she was going through a lot. You know morning sickness and mood swings. Scott talked to Joey a lot about that stuff after all Joey had been there when Kelly had been pregnant. He would always call while we took breaks from recording. Joey would always chuckle and say that it was normal and not to worry it would go away.

“I really wish you would find out, so you both would quit calling me.” I said. “You don’t want me to call anymore?” She snapped. “No, I want you to call, just not everyday and always about me talking to Scott about the baby. It doesn’t matter what the baby is anyway, it will still be your child.” I replied. “But I want a girl, don’t you want it to be a girl?” She asked. I shook my head. “I don’t care what it is, beside it’s not like you get to pick anyway. Isn’t it kind of what god decides your having?” I asked.

“I guess so.” She said quietly. “I know you want a girl but you have to realize it might be a boy.” I said. “Did Scott tell you to say that?” She asked. “God, you are moody aren’t you. No, Scott didn’t put me up to anything. Scott need to realize that it might be a girl.” I said trying to get out of the hole I was digging. “I am not moody. But that sounds good you should tell Scott that.” She said. “I will the next time he calls.” I huffed, this was getting old. “When will that be?” She asked once again sounding sweet. “Knowing my luck as soon as you hang up.” I said. “Good, I’ll talk to you later then.” She replied and then hung up before I could even say good bye.

I heard Joey laugh as I hung up. “Are all pregnant women that way?” I asked. “I am afraid so.” Joey said with a smile. “Then remind me never to get Ann pregnant.” JC said walking into the room. “Has she said anything about it yet?” I asked. “No, and I hope it stays that way, at least for a while. After seeing what her friends are going through, I think not having a baby right now is one thing we totally agree on.” JC explained. “From what Scott tells me, this child might be any only child.” Joey said

.
“You’re a father, does it get better once the baby is here?” I asked. “Yeah, once you hold it on your arms, it all seems worth it after all. I wouldn’t trade my baby girl in for anything.” Joey said. “I for one can’t wait for her to have it.” Lance interrupted. “Why is that?” Chris asked. “That girl can get an attitude, plus she has a good arm. She got mad at me because I told her that it might not be such a good idea to go into the studio. I thought she should wait until after the baby is born and then see how she feels. But she through her cell phone at me and told me to leave.” Lance explained. “That would explained the weird message on my voice mall the other day.” I said.

We worked hard a finished our new album just in time to kick off a summer tour. We planed the tour around Abbey’s do date, since they had asked JC and Ann to be the baby’s god parents, it seemed only right that they be there for the birth. Since neither one of them were really religious I was surprised they wanted god parents, but I guess in the event that something happened to them they wanted to make sure some one would be there to look after the baby. Abbey and Scott’s families wouldn’t have wanted the baby, I wouldn’t trust them with a baby any way.

They came by a few times just to see us on tour, Abbey was getting huge. But I’ll tell you one thing, a pregnant lady never looked so good. Abbey was so cute and with that big belly, it just made her adorable. I told her that all the time, I got the feeling her didn’t fell very attractive. That had to have been the biggest she had ever been and it was all baby. She looked to me like she had swallowed a basketball. Scott was happy too, he was always telling her he loved her and they were going to be a family.

I’ll never forget when we got the call. We had just got to the hotel when Scott called to say Abbey had gone into labor early and they were on their way to the hospital now. We threw are stuff in our room and then got back in the car. I was going along with Ann and JC to the hospital because Scott and Abbey both said they wanted me there. I think they would have picked me to be the baby’s god parent if I had a wife, but Ann and JC were defiantly a better choice, I didn’t see marriage in my future.

When we got there we quickly found Roxy and Danny in hall way near the room. “She isn’t ready yet, you can go in and say hi, I’m sure she will want to know that you are here.” Roxy said pushing me toward the door. I hesitated, but I guess Abbey saw me. “You guys you made it.” She said holding her arms out to me. I walked in and hugged her lightly then stepped aside so the others could hug her.

“You look so good for someone who is about to have a baby.” Ann joked. “I don’t feel so pretty.” Abbey wined brushing her hair out of her face. Scott came over and gave me a hug. “thanks for being here if it wasn’t for you we wouldn’t be together and we wouldn’t be having this baby.” He said as he let go. “I can’t think of any place I’d rather be. I’m just glad this will finally be over and I won’t have to listen to you argue over the baby’s gender any more.” I explained. Scott laughed, “Yeah I guess it’s the moment of truth.”

I jumped as Abbey let out a painful scream. “Is that normal.” I asked a little worried. “She’s just having a contraction. We’ll be ready to deliver soon.” The nurse said. Scott ran back over to Abbey and held her hand as she worked through the pain. “I think maybe I should wait in the waiting room.” I said not actually wanted to witness the birth. “It’s probably a good idea, we’ll be ready in a minute. Who do you want to stay Abbey?” The nurse asked and Abbey started to relax.

“My husband, the others can if they want.” Abbey said looking lovingly at Scott.
“I think we will leave you two alone, we’ll be back as soon as that little bundle of joy is here.” Ann said waving good bye to her friends, and she fallowed me out the door. “Okay, but I want you all back there the moment it’s over.” Abbey yelled. We all made our way to the waiting room.

It seemed like forever as we waited for any news. I had to admit I started to worry after about 30 minutes. But it wasn’t long after that the nurse came and got us. “Your friend is asking for you.” the nurse said. “Did she have the baby?” Ann asked. “Yes.” The nurse replied as she lead us back to the delivery room. I walked in first for some reason, Abbey was sitting up in the bed holding her baby. She smiled up at me while Scott didn’t take his eyes off of the baby. “We had a little girl.” Abbey said with a smile. I walked over to them and looked down at the baby. It didn’t seem affair but like her mother and father the baby seemed perfect.

“Sorry dude, I guess Abbey was right, it was a girl.” I said. “I’ll live.” Scott replied finally looking up at me. I could tell he was happy, even though he didn’t think he would be, I know how bad he want a boy. Ann and JC got to hold the baby first, being the god parents and all it was only fair. They passed it around the room, but when it got to me I was scared.

“Here Justin it’s your turn to hold her.” Roxy said holding the tiny baby out to me. “No, I can’t I might drop her.” I wined. “You won’t drop her.” Roxy said pushing the baby into my arms. I was tense, I had never held a baby this young before. She was so tiny. I was in awe by her, like I had been by her mother so many times before. “You look like your mother, I guess dad is going to have his hands full when you get older because guys are going to be all over you.” I said sweetly.

I heard Abbey giggle. “I am almost afraid to ask, what’s her name?” I asked, knowing that too had been the cause of a lot of arguing over the past few months. They both looked at each other and smiled. “Her names is Melody Justine.” Scott replied. “How did you come up with that?” JC asked. “Well I wanted to a girl named Melody Ann, and Scott wanted a boy named Justin Riley. So we met each other half way.” Abbey explained. “But it suits her, Melody because we’re singers and Justine after the guy who helped us find each other.” Scott added.

I blushed at that point, they had named their baby after me for crying out load, what more could some one ask for. “You know what that means, now I have to spoil her and buy her things.” I replied. “More power to you mister money bags.” Abbey laughed. I laughed too and then handed the baby back to Scott. Everything seemed so right in the world as we stood in that tiny room, but I knew tomorrow the word would be out and everyone would want to see the baby.
