In Your Footstep

Part 6

I could tell Scott was nervous, as I walked Roxy down the isle and then joined him and Danny. Once the music changed, I felt my heart beat faster as Abbey appeared in the isle holding onto the arm of her father. I looked over at Scott who couldn’t take his eyes off his bride as she made her way to him. I’m not even sure he blinked.
As they got closer I saw a single tear roll off her cheek as she looked into the eyes of the man she loved. This was the kind of love that could only happen in stories, so true and untouched. This was the first time I had seen her cry in my years of knowing her. She had to be happy beyond words.

When they joined hands their eyes never left each other as they did as the preacher told them. Finally Scott turned to Danny and asked him for the ring. That’s when I saw that he too had been crying or was about to cry. They said ‘I Do’ and then it was over before I knew it, the next thing I knew I was standing in the receiving line thanking people for coming. I looked over at them a few times, they were always kissing, holding hands, or in some way touching. It was almost as if they wanted to know the other one was really there and wasn’t leaving. They were close and in love, it was so real, no one there could have denied it.

Later at the reception, we were partying hard with their families. It was fun, like they had said, it was a small wedding with only family and close friends. I got to meet Scott’s father, though I had to admit I was just as bitter with him as Scott, but neither of us let him know that.

“May I cut in?” I asked approaching the young couple. I could tell that they didn’t want to be split up, but I wanted to dance with her at least one time. “Come on Scott, let me dance with your wife, you get to have her for the rest of your life, I only want 5 minutes.” I explained. Scott smiled, “Okay, but I want her back in one piece. She means more to me than you do.” He warned as Abbey took my arm. “Relax, I won’t hurt her, we’ll be right back.” I said and then moved her to the center of the dance floor.

As we dance I couldn’t help but think back to that night at the club, when I first realized who she was in love with. I wanted her for myself, but I knew there was nothing I could do to take her away from Scott. I could only hope that one day I would find a woman as wonderful as her. I must have been crying, though I’m not sure why.

“J, what’s wrong?” She asked looking up at me. I quickly wiped the tears off my cheeks and tried to play it cool. “Nothing is wrong.” I replied. “Then why are you crying?” She asked sweetly. “I’m not sure, I think I have something in my eye.” I lied. “You are such a terrible liar.” Abbey joked. “I know.” I said still trying to dry my eyes. “What is it J?” Abbey asked concerned. “I guess I am just jealous. I want what you guys have so bad.” I cried letting my head rest on her shoulder. She wrapped her arms tightly arm me.

“You’ll find her, someday.” She said, and for some reason I believed her. I pulled away from her and looked her in the eyes. I stopped crying and smiled back at her. “You’re right, I will find her and she will be so amazing.” I said. Abbey just nodded in agreement. “She’ll make all of the girl jealous.” She replied. “Even you?” I asked spinning her around in place. “Yep, even me.” Abbey laughed. “Your the best friend I have ever had.” I said giving her a big hug. “You too. Let’s stay that way.” Abbey said hugging me back. “You got it, nothing will ever change that.” I sad letting go of her just as Scott approached us.

“You had your 5 minutes, can I have her back now?” Scott asked. “She’s all yours dude, take good care of her.” I said smiling at him. “You know I will.” Scott said looking at Abbey. “Yeah, I know you will. You guys were made for each other.” I said and then walked over to where Chris was.

“You have to admit, they do look great together.” Chris said as I reached him. “Yeah, they do.” I said looking back at Abbey and Scott, who were back in each others arms where they belonged. Chris must have noticed where I was looking. “They look great together too, but I was talking about them.” He said point to Ann and JC, who were enjoying the slow song that played in the background. I watched them for a minute. They were dancing like they were the only ones on the dance floor, they were completely unaware of anyone around them.

“It is kind of special, isn’t it?” I asked not taking my eyes off my friend and his new love. “I never thought I would say this, but I think JC is really in love this time.” Chris said setting his empty glass down on the table behind him. “I think you’re right, but what does that mean for us?” I asked a little worried. “What are you worried about, you could always go solo, I’m the one who’s screwed.” Chris laughed. I patted him on the back. “We’ve already made enough money to last you a lifetime, old man.” I joking back. He just smiled at me and didn’t say another word.

I was walking around later greeting people, when I came across Lance. He had one hand on Roxy’s hip and the in other he had a glass of Champaign. I figured now would be a good time to talk to him about JC. “Lance, you got a second?” I asked. “You were right about Abbey and Scott. I can’t tell you how sorry I am for flipping out. So, what’s up?” Lance asked not letting go of Roxy. “I’m pretty insightful when it comes to love aren’t I?” I asked. “Yeah, you hit the nail on the head.” Lance said, using one of his silly cowboy saying, which never made sense to me when he was sober, so I have no clue what it meant when he was drunk.

“Yeah, well we need to talk about JC.” I stated. “What about him?” Lance asked taking a drink. “I think he means about JC and Ann.” Roxy explained for me, I just nodded. “I am happy for JC, I glad he’s finally getting some.” Lance said. “Oh, he’s not getting anything.” Roxy said out of no where. She wasn’t much of a drinker, unlike the rest of us, she might have been the only sober one there. So what ever she was saying had some logic to it.

“What do you mean?” I asked, but I could tell Lance was thinking the same thing. “Ann, she’s a virgin and she plans to stay that way until she is married.” Roxy explained. “That doesn’t make sense.” I said giving her a dumb founded look. “Why not, it’s not unheard of.” Roxy said putting her hands on her hips. “It sure is for JC.” Lance blurted out, though I am sure no one else was paying attention to our conversation.

“Look, what I think my drunk friend is trying to say is that JC sure the hell isn’t.” I explained. “So?” Roxy questioned. “It’s not like him to go for long periods with out sex, it just seems odd to us that he wouldn’t have convinced her it was okay by now.” I said trying to explained JC logic to her. “Ann said he hasn’t been pushing the subject. She wouldn’t lie to me about that. Girls talk about that stuff all of the time, it’s what we do and they have not done it.” Roxy said feeling confident. “I’ll be the judge of that.” I said and then walked to where JC was.

The couple had taken a break from dancing. “Hey JC where is Ann?” I asked. “She had to go to the bathroom.” JC explained. I smiled I knew I had at least a few minute, girls always take forever in the bathroom. “So, how are things between you and Ann?” I asked. “Things a great, they couldn’t be better.” JC said with a smile. “Really, you really like this girl, uh?” I questioned. “Yeah man. She so prefect for me.” JC said. “So, I take it she’s pretty good in bed?” I asked hitting him playfully in the arm.

“There is more to her than that, she is a great person and I wouldn’t want to change that.” JC said with a big smile. He must have seen Ann come out of the bathroom, because he left without another word. Roxy and Lance wasted no time in finding me. “So what did he say?” Roxy asked. “I don’t believe it, JC is actually dating a girl he hasn’t banged.” I said in disbelief. I knew he didn’t come right out and say it, but JC was never one to brag about his sex life or lack there of.

“Told you so, I think you guys owe me a drink.” Roxy said taking both of our arms and leading us to the bar. “I didn’t think you were much of a drinker.” I said as I paid for the drink. “I’m not, but my two best friends just got married. I can drink to that.” She said raising her glass. I raised mine along with her. “Me too.” I said as we toasted the bride and groom. I woke a few hours later in my bed at the hotel, though I am not sure how I got there. Things must have gotten pretty wild because I had Roxy’s bra and Abbey grader. I returned the bra to Roxy which she accused me of stealing, though I don’t know how you can steal a girl’s bra with out her knowing it.

A few days later I tracked down Joey, I knew there was no point in talking to him at the reception. I wanted to make sure, that if JC decided to move forward with his relationship, all of the guys would support him. I felt the support of the group is what made Abbey and Scott’s marriage possible, had they been against it, it would have never happened.

Joey was spend some much needed time at home with his girlfriend and daughter. We had decided as a group to once again take some time off to do our own thing. “You are so pretty, Briana, you must get it from your mother.” I said bending down to look her in the eye, while Joey playfully bounced her on his knee. “Hey.” Joey snapped in a mock angry tone. The little girl just giggled, as did her mother. “She does look like her mother though.” Joey explained handing his little girl over to Kelly.

“So what brings you here?” Joey asked turning to me. I sat down on the chair opposite him. “I wanted to talk to you about JC and Ann.” I explained. “I wanted to ask you about that, it looks like they are getting pretty serious.” Joey said. “Yeah, it looks that way to me too. I just wanted to see if you were cool with it.” I said looking around his new place. “I’m cool with it, I mean if me loves her, I totally support him. It’s about time he settle down.” Joey said smiling up at Kelly as she brought him and soda.

“It’s about time we all settle down, we aren’t getting any younger.” I said eying my friend. Joey knew I thought it was about time he got married, I mean Kelly did already have his child, I didn’t see any reason why they hadn’t got married. I guess Joey was just to much of a lady’s man to settle down just yet. “Are we still talking about JC or are we talking about all of us, because I have no plans to get hitched and you don’t even have a girlfriend.” Joey said.

I looked away for a minute then I looked back at my friend. “I don’t know what the hell I am talking about any more.” I explained. “It’s okay dude, you’ve been acting really weird these past few month, are you feeling well?” Joey asked sincerely. “I feel fine, I just have a lot on my mind.” I said. “You should talk to Chris, didn’t he go to college for psychology?” Joey asked. “Yeah, he did but he quit to join Nsync. Besides that guy doesn’t need to be a shrink, he needs a shrink.” I joked. Joey just laughed and drank his soda.

“But if you’re here about JC and Ann, I told you I support him no matter what. Now you should get out of here and go enjoy our time off. You’re young Justin just go enjoy life while you can. You have all that money and you should just go have fun with it, that’s why we do all this work.” Joey explained leaning closer to me. I thought for a minute, “You’re right, I’m going to go have me some fun. You take care, we’ll be in touch.” I said getting up. Joey walked me to the door, as I was about to hop in my new car, Joey stuck his head out of the house. “And don’t worry Justin, you’ll find some one some day.” He yelled at me.

I stood stunned for a few minutes, I had no idea he even knew anything about that. But I guess when you spend so much time with some one they get to know you really well. I smiled and waved before getting in and driving off.
